The Swedish court: ”not self-defense” – rapper and crew have to pay damages

A Swedish court has found ASAP Rocky guilty of assault.
The rapper and two men in his crew all were handed suspended sentences and will have to pay damages to the 19 year old victim.
”The court has found that this is not a matter of self-defense”, says judge Per Lennebrant during a press conference following the sentencing.
Rakim ”ASAP Rocky” Mayers, 30, have been found guilty of assault.
According to the Swedish court the rapper and two men in his crew kicked and hit the 19 year old victim, but they have found no proof of any glass bottle being used in the assault. On the other hand the court also found no proof of the attack being considered as self-defense.
”The court has found that this is not a matter of self-defense”, says judge Per Lennebrant during a press conference following the sentencing.
”The court have found that they are guilty of assault and this crime is not to be considered as minor. However the court has found that imprisonment is not necessary”, judge Lennebrant says regarding handing the three men suspented sentences.
Damages to be paid ”in solidarity”
ASAP Rocky and the two other men are all handed suspended sentences and will have to pay damagesto the victim, but not in the range of 15 000 US dollars as demanded by the 19 year old man’s lawyer. The court instead sentenced ASAP Rocky and his two friends to pay damages in a total of 2 500 US dollars. The damages are to be paid by the three offenders ”in solidarity”, meaning that they all have the responsibility to make sure the victim gets the full amount.
ASAP Rocky and the other two are also sentenced to pay approximately 20 000 US dollars to cover for the victim’s court costs. But because of ASAP Rocky’s friends’ low incomes they only have to cover 40 percent of those costs, amounting to 8 000 US dollars.
ASAP Rocky’s laywer Slobodan Jovicic has communicated with his client via text message due to another court case.
”My client is very disapointed with the sentence”, Jovicic says at a press conference.
